The Knowle and Dorridge rail crash was a fatal rail crash that occurred at Dorridge railway station in the West Midlands , England , on 15 August Three people died in the crash after a signalman’s error routed a small freight train into the path of an express passenger train which slowed but could not stop before colliding with it. The freight train movement in Dorridge station formerly called Knowle and Dorridge was a routine shunting manoeuvre, one that often occurred both before or after the express train had passed through the station.
The Pullman was 9 coaches long, and was hauled by an month-old diesel hydraulic Class 52 “Western” locomotive, No. The crash occurred in fine dry weather, at around 1. The locomotive struck the loaded flat car crushing the cab, but without derailing. All four men on the freight train, the driver, fireman, shunter and guard, managed to jump clear before the collision. The driver, co-driver and second man on the express locomotive all died. It was found that the signalman at Knowle and Dorridge signal box had forgotten he had signalled that the up main line was clear for the express train and allowed the freight train onto the same line, in its path.
On receiving a “train approaching” signal for the express, he realised his mistake, but was only able to alert the freight train by red flag. Although it braked to a halt, it could not be cleared from the main line in time to avoid the collision.

A very wrong-headed campaign has been set-up that claims that railways are bad for the environment. Specifically, HS2 — which a coalition of campaign groups argue is going to destroy lots of woodland, promote air travel and dump tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. The biggest concern, or at least the one generating the biggest awareness is the damage to ancient woodland. Undeniably, digging up any woodland is generally bad, and ancient woodlands do tend to have a more diverse environment, but if the choice is between digging up some woodlands, or encouraging more people to drive cars — which is the lesser of two evils?
But to build a new railway, sadly, yes, some damage needs to be done to permit the construction works. Firstly we should look at just how bad HS2 actually is. The impact is vanishingly tiny.
The misguided environmental protests against HS2
By the time the Senior Men were ready for the off at 3pm the double 6k loop course resembled more of a swamp than English fields. What a fantastic course though. The iconic start up Parliament Hill, ups and down all the way, muddy ditches, woodlands and lots of technical turns all on ground that was difficult to walk on let alone run over! Over 2, lined up ready for the gun and the charge up Parliament Hill.
We are called forward. Silence descends.
